Screening difficult whey powders

The Russell Vibrasonic® Deblinding System reduces production downtime by preventing mesh blockage when screening whey powder

With producers of whey powders looking to capitalize on a rapidly growing market, companies are seeking new ways to optimize their production methods, in order to stay ahead of competition. Also, with stringent standards of food hygiene regulations, it is important that all equipment in the production line protects the quality of the final whey product, from whey protein isolate and concentrates to hydrolyzed whey protein and lactose.

In this demonstration video, whey powder is screened using the 900mm Russell Compact Sieve®. This vibratory screener is used to ensure the highest quality of the whey powder is achieved by removing oversize contamination. Designed to provide higher capacities, whilst requiring half the headroom of traditional industrial screeners, these vibratory sieves ensure productivity of your production process is maintained without the need for extra space. The hygienic design of the Russell Compact Sieve®, with the option of an enclosed lid, all-stainless steel contact parts, and no hidden areas or bug traps, makes it the ideal solution for safety screening food powders.

During the screening of fine powders such as whey , mesh blockage (also known as blinding) can occur. The fine granules of material can stick to the mesh and each other, meaning a reduced area for the good product to pass through, and so reduced throughput. Upgrading the Russell Compact Sieve® with the Russell Vibrasonic® Deblinding System eliminates mesh blockage, meaning increased output, as well as reducing the downtime caused by having to stop operation, strip the machine down and clean the mesh. This ultrasonic deblinding system solution applies a frequency via an easy-to-use control box, breaking the surface tension of the mesh and keeping it clear of powder particles. The product can easily pass through the fine mesh, achieving a high-quality, contaminant-free whey powder.
