Replacing Bag Filters with Russell Filters

May 16, 2012

Replace bag filters with Industrial filtration technology form Russell Finex to reduce costs, increase productivity and improve product quality

Bag filters are a simple solution to remove oversized contamination for liquid products. However, although the initial capital investment is low compared to more advanced filtration solutions, long term costs caused by the frequent need for filter bag replacement as well as the associated cost of labour and production downtime can make this unviable as a long term solution. In addition, the environmental impact of disposing of the used filter bags is also both costly and can impact a company’s CSR.

A company processing polystyrene for the production of foam products, such as cups and refrigerator linings, experienced these problems when using bag filters in their production line. Furthermore, another major problem was that contamination was passing through the bag filters. This was due to the polystyrene jelly like pellets being able to extrude through the bags. As a result, filter bags would require more frequent changing. A further issue was that the product was hazardous and therefore operator handling and exposure needed to be kept to a minimum.

The company therefore decided to replace their existing bag filters and turned to Russell Finex after conducting a search on the Internet. Following a consultation, a trial was set up for the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter®. The trial proved to be very successful, with the self-cleaning filter achieving a higher throughput rate than the bag filter, whilst also ensuring zero contamination. Due to the specific requirements of the company, the filter was customized to meet their specific needs. Usually supplied with flanges and band clamps, the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® was modified to be bolted instead. In addition, double mechanical seals were also supplied instead of lip seals. These customizations were requested to provide complete peace of mind that there would be absolutely no chance of product leakage that could harm operators’ health and safety.
