Sieving solutions for nutritional supplement powders
With nutritional supplements requiring uniform particle size for quality, consistency and performance, sieving is a critical step in the manufacturing process. By removing oversized particles, agglomerates, and foreign contaminants, sieving helps create a homogeneous blend. This helps powders mix evenly with other ingredients, improving dosage accuracy in each serving.
As India’s leading nutrition supplement manufacturer, Scicore looked to upgrade their existing supplement powder sieving solution. This was to better support the production of premium dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, sports nutrition, and functional nutrition products.
Scicore operates six dedicated dry powder blending lines, equipped with a range of advanced blenders. Blenders include ribbon, octagonal, conta/bin, and double cone blenders which help support a wide range of applications. This helps the manufacturer produce over 1 million kilograms of supplement powder each month.
The production process starts with sourcing raw materials and sieving the powders to ensure a uniform particle size. The active ingredients are blended before dosing the product into the required form.
The challenge of sieving nutritional supplement powder
Poor sieving of nutritional supplement powders can lead to a range of quality, safety, and processing challenges that negatively impact the final product. Without effective screening, oversized particles and agglomerates can remain in the mix. This can cause inaccurate dosing, where some servings contain too much or too little of key nutrients, undermining both product effectiveness and consumer trust. Additionally, inadequate sieving increases the risk of contamination, posing serious safety and compliance concerns.
From a manufacturing perspective, poorly sieved powders often lead to reduced flowability which leads to blockages, downtime, and inefficiencies in production lines.
During their own powder sieving, Scicore experienced these powder handling challenges. Their original sieving process was time-intensive and significantly limited their productivity. As the company prepared to scale their operations and keep adhering to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), it became clear that a more efficient sieving solution was required.
The solution for nutritional supplement powder sieving
Scicore invested in our Russell Compact Sieve® and Russell Compact Airlock Sieve™ to increase their sieving capacity and support their increased production demands. As a result, Scicore has seen a 50% reduction in the time it takes to sieve a batch of supplement powder, often reaching 5,200 kilograms per batch.
In addition to higher production output, the manufacturer has benefited from greater consistency with particle size distribution compared to their previous sieving method. Scicore operates our vibratory sieve units with different mesh sizes including 20, 30, and 60 microns to meet customers’ requirements.
