Removing contamination from fish food

Aquatic nutrition specialist doubles throughput with the Russell Finex Separator™

World Feeds is a specialist fish food manufacturer known for innovating aquatic nutrition. Its philosophy is to feed fish better with a complete and balanced diet. Based in Doncaster, U.K., it has been in business for 17 years and sells to over 40 countries worldwide.

The manufacturer creates diets for species from the smallest freshwater fish to the largest marine exhibit and sells to retailers, hobbyists with home aquariums, and public aquariums worldwide, including SeaWorld in Abu Dhabi. It also manufactures products containing the correct nutritional elements to feed cleaner fish, including lumpfish and wrasse, that eat the lice living on salmon.

The manufacturing process starts with human-grade ingredients sourced from the sea. These can include 20 different types of vitamins, minerals, fish meal, shrimp, squid, and mussels, all supplied as powders. It's essential to get the correct formulation of ingredients so that each flake, block, or pellet contains the right amount of vitamins and minerals.

However, the powdered ingredients can often contain oversized particles and so in these cases, the manufacturer must sieve them to allow for reliable and consistent extrusion into pellets and other presentations.

When World Feeds started its business in 2005, it used an old unit to grade and screen raw ingredients. However, as the business grew, this unit was no longer able to cope with customers' requirements. As a result, World Feeds decided to invest in a Finex Separator™ to handle these larger volumes. Within two years, the company's continued growth meant it needed a second machine.

The flow rate with the new vibratory separator has more than doubled compared to the old unit. Previously, operators filled the machine with scoops; now, they can add a 25-kilogram bag of ingredients, making the production process more manageable.

What our customers say

“Our Russell Finex sales engineer was very patient. First, he showed us what the Russell Finex machines could do. He also took sample products away for testing and created videos from the Russell Finex Technology Centre to show us what was possible. Then, when we decided to go ahead, he committed to a date, and it was delivered on that date."
