Global cellulose manufacturer improves productivity by 30%

A leading manufacturer based in South Korea produces a range of cellulose-based materials with different applications. The company supplies cellulose ethers for use as thickeners and emulsifiers in food products, as well as tablet coatings and vegetable capsules for pharmaceutical customers. The manufacturer’s products are certified by multiple international bodies, including the FDA, EDQM, and WHO.

The production of cellulose-based materials starts by blending the products and using a vibratory sieving machine to remove foreign materials. The products are then classified to ensure the particles meet the required specifications before they are moved to the packaging stage.

The manufacturer’s processing capacity was limited by the sieving machine it used to separate cellulose products. A particular challenge for the company was handling low bulk density powders. These constraints resulted in lower productivity and reduced the plant’s overall production efficiency.

Finex Separator

After receiving on-site advice from a Russell Finex sales engineer, the company purchased the Finex Separator™. Russell Finex's vibratory separator provides fast and accurate grading of powders. It also supports multiple screens, allowing manufacturers to sort up to five different-sized fractions.

For its cellulose products, the manufacturer chose three mesh screens of 100, 80, and 60 microns to support the grading of powders across both its pharmaceutical and food products.

Since installing the cellulose vibratory separator, classification productivity has increased by approximately 20-30% for lower-productivity grades. The company has seen significant improvements in its overall production efficiency too.

The company’s process has also benefited from the integration of the Russell Gated Outlet™, which has provided flexible and efficient product control of the screening process. This sieve upgrade is a pneumatically controlled gate located inside the outlet of the sieve deck. When inflated, it becomes a barrier; when deflated, it allows contamination to be ejected.
