Emulco removes contaminants from its emulsions and cuts filtering time by 83%
Emulco is a producer of elastomeric and plant-based wax emulsions located at Ghent Seaport, Belgium. This production facility has a manufacturing capacity for industrial volumes as well as research and development facilities.
The paper and packaging industries are key consumers of wax emulsions. Due to the water barrier created by emulsions, these products are essential inputs to technical paper and food contact paper. The rising demand for plastic-free products has also increased the need for plant-based emulsions.
During the manufacturing process, it is essential to filter contaminants from the emulsified products. Emulco previously found that the use of bag filters led to frequent blockages, requiring constant replacing. Not only did this slow down production, but also compromised hygiene standards as the replacement process would cause product spillage.
Emulco switched to a Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® to meet its needs of filtering at 150 microns. This uses a ‘defined hole’ reusable microscreen media to avoid the continual replacement of bag filters. Also, the enclosed system allowed Emulco to pump emulsions without production stoppages and spillages, eliminating wastage while boosting efficiency.
With the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter®, the packaging process only took 2 hours for 12-metric tons of product with flow rates of 11,000 to 12,000 liters per hour. This was 83% faster compared to bag filters that took 10 to 12 hours.
