Filtering contamination in protective coating processes

NedZink cuts downtime by 15% and runs production for up to 50 hours with the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter®

NedZink is one of the top four zinc producers in the world, producing rolled titanium zinc for roofing, gutters, façade cladding, and rainwater drainage systems. NedZink uses a unique chemical treatment to add a colored layer to the zinc that provides a protective coating. Without coating, zinc discolors and marks even from minor abrasions like fingerprints.

The process of manufacturing rolled titanium zinc begins with the creation of coils and sheets. The zinc sheets are degreased before the cleaning product is rinsed off. The next step is activation to prepare the zinc for phosphating and passivating. After rinsing and drying, NedZink applies the final protective coating to the zinc products. The coating solution is applied onto the zinc sheets using coating rollers, and the excess solution is collected and recirculated.

The excess solution collected small particles of contamination during the recirculation process, which were then transferred onto the zinc products during the coating process. The contamination damaged the surface finish of the zinc and meant the products failed quality control. NedZink used a simple filter to remove contaminants from the coating solution. However, tiny particles still ended up in the coating as the mesh size was one to two millimeters. In addition, the filter frequently became clogged with contamination.

After a successful machine trial, the manufacturer purchased the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter®. With the industrial filter for coatings installed, NedZink has experienced up to 15% less downtime. The manufacturer can now run production for up to 50 hours continuously because it no longer suffers from mesh blockages or the contamination affecting the quality of the zinc products. Previously, NedZink had to close its production line every 8 to 10 hours to clear blockages and remove the contamination from the filter.
