Men’s cancer awareness month

Raising awareness for the common cancers affecting men

During March, Russell Finex took part in men’s cancer awareness month. During the month, the team put together a range of materials shared to staff raising awareness for the common cancers that affect men as well as holding two roadshows in collaboration with the Mulberry Centre.

This year, Russell Finex have partnered with the Mulberry Centre making them our nominated charity for the year. The Mulberry Centre is a local charity, based on the grounds of West Middlesex Hospital providing information and support to anyone affected by cancer.

Managing Director Ray Singh said “I am delighted that Russell Finex will be partnering with the Mulberry Centre during 2022. They are an excellent local charity, and it is fantastic that they can support our Men’s Cancer Awareness Month”

The two roadshows held at our headquarters in Feltham encouraged staff to talk to Julie Quinn, the Mulberry Cancer Information and Support Services Manager and share their own stories. After being diagnosed with bowel cancer at 32, Andy Brooks said “As men we neglect our health, we really shouldn’t so I urge you if you have pains or feel like something is wrong then see your doctor and talk to people, do not keep the worries of it all to yourself.

In 2021, Carl Lilley discovered an Actinic keratosis on his scalp, luckily caught early, the treatment he received has proved successful and he is now currently clear. He said “Actinic keratosis is commonly caused by an over exposure to sunlight, typically getting burnt.  I would urge everyone to wear a hat and to use a high factor sunscreen on your face to protect yourself”.

These staff stories were a great way to raise awareness to break the stigma surrounding men’s cancer. We hope this has had a big difference on our staff’s attitude to help recognize the symptoms of cancer early on. We look forward to other collaborations with the Mulberry this year, raising awareness and money for the charity. For help and support, please contact The Mulberry Centre.
